The first comprehensive online database of passenger lists from ships departing the UK on long-distance voyages to destinations including North America, Australia, India and South Africa between 1890 and 1960 went live on ancestorsonboard.com in January 2007.
The easily-searchable and user-friendly database enables would-be genealogists and family historians alike to view digitised images of the original ship passenger records online. These contain over 1.5 million pages, listing the 30 million passengers who travelled on long-distance journeys from UK ports.
The records offer a range of information, from simply the passenger’s name and age to much more detailed information on them, such as their UK address, year of birth, marital status, occupation and nationality. There is also information on the departure and destination ports, the ship’s name and date of travel. Through these records it is possible to find some unique information about ancestors who travelled overseas.
