Why Virtualisation?  Virtualisation helps consolidate application workloads onto fewer, more highly utilised servers and storage devices. Reducing the number of physical servers reduces the energy requirement for those servers as well as requirements for associated cooling, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS’s) and peripheral systems.  

Virtualisation allows multiple operating systems and applications to be deployed in a fully scalable environment comprising single or multiple servers. 

How does it work? VMware takes a traditional high performance server and abstracts resources (CPU, memory, disk and network). Virtual Machines all run independently of each other, so a crash on one can’t cause another to fail. Each virtual dedicated server has its own private memory, disk space, network and operating system. Using sophisticated resource management, these virtual servers are allocated dedicated resources. CPU power, memory or disk is never shared.
