Data Centre Solution of the Year Winner 2016
European IT & Software Excellence Awards
We were delighted to win this award, given to solution providers who redesigned a customer data centre or implemented a new technology within a data centre that had a significant positive impact on the operations of the customer after understanding their exact requirements with the ability to deliver the solution within the defined time scale, exceeding expectations. Here’s our winning entry:
Aberdeen City Council provides a range of online services to Aberdeen’s population of around 220,000. The Council’s existing contract with a global systems integrator expired at the beginning of January 2016 and, in advance of the end date, the council sought a local IT partner that could deliver an end-to-end service whilst meeting its stringent organisational requirements. Aberdeen City Council required a flexible partner which could ensure any citizen, no matter how remotely located, had fast access to its services at all times. Following a tender released on the Scottish Government Hosting Services Framework, Aberdeen City Council made the decision to migrate its entire IT estate to brightsolid’s private cloud.
Aberdeen City Council selected brightsolid because it could provide flexible data centre services at a competitive price. It was the only Scotland-based company in a position to deliver the services required by the Council. Its Tier III facility in Aberdeen was built and designed to the very highest standards of operational excellence in business continuity and security. This level of security, and its place on the Government Hosting Services Framework, means that it is able to host public sector data. brightsolid was selected to provide the Council with a managed data centre service, through a private cloud in its Aberdeen facility.
After a detailed review of existing infrastructure, brightsolid was able to migrate the Council’s entire IT estate to its private cloud in just six weeks, while working closely with the Council’s previous provider to ensure that throughout the migration there was no disruption to normal service. This timeframe also included the implementation of a disaster recovery plan for the Council in line with their business continuity standards.
The Council required brightsolid to migrate its IT estate and get its services up and running on the new system in a tight time frame, given that its previous contract was close to an end. The Council’s previous provider was based in Edinburgh and the brightsolid team had to overcome geographical distances, coupled with unexpected bridge closures and weather conditions whilst moving the Council’s IT infrastructure to their Aberdeen data centre. This meant that moving the equipment took longer than expected, impacting on an already tight timescale.
brightsolid is a values driven organisation and work hard to ‘think outside the cube’ when overcoming obstacles and always look to “surpass expectations” when working with customers and partners. This mentality, along with exceptional communication between brightsolid and Aberdeen City Council led to the successful completion of the project in a very short period of time.
The ability to migrate its entire IT estate in just six weeks with no disruption to service was a great result for the Council. Its new systems now implemented, The Council has already begun to reap the benefits of its partnership with brightsolid, according to Sandra Massey, IT manager at Aberdeen City Council:
“We’re seeing improved connectivity, partly because the new data centre is so much closer to the council’s offices, so we don’t have the latency we used to. We are also seeing some immediate operational savings, and we feel more in control of our environment again.”
The migration to brightsolid’s private cloud also paves the way for Aberdeen Council to pursue shared infrastructure initiatives, collaborating with other councils to reduce its costs. This meets the requirements set out in Scottish Government policies over the last couple of years that advocate shared resources, more collaborative working, and better, more efficient provision of services with end cost savings.
For example, within brightsolid’s private cloud, the Council now has the flexibility to take up a shared services approach to IT delivery with neighbouring councils. As multiple councils can operate out of the same data centre, they will be able to collaborate parts of their infrastructure and key applications, which will result in cost savings, and better efficiency and speed for public bodies.
“The two big things for us were that we wanted to share infrastructure, and reduce our costs,” said Sandra Massey, IT manager at Aberdeen City Council. “We had elements of private cloud in the previous contract, and what we are hoping to see with the new arrangement is more flexibility in extending the use of that.”
Award winning data centres
Data centre excellence
brightsolid were the first Scottish organisation to have been awarded the Rittal data centre excellence award for showing the greatest innovation in the design and running of a data centre.
Rittal said, “The cloud and data centre provider was nominated thanks to its innovative chimney rack design, which supports the ecofris cooling system; its use of the TS-IT rack and power bar bundle that provides an innovative space saving solution within its server racks; its use of front air baffle kits and Eziblank panels to efficiently manage the air coming into the server racks; and its cable management bundle which provides an efficient cable route within its server racks. This technology allows brightsolid to operate at an extremely low power usage efficiency, making it one of the most environmentally friendly data centres in the UK“.
