NHS Health Scotland needed a responsive and scalable infrastructure and cloud strategy to help support ongoing service growth demands.
NHS Health Scotland is a national Health Board who works to reduce health inequalities and improve health in Scotland. They initially approached Brightsolid with a need for off-site disaster recovery with geographic separation from their production environment, connected to the N3 Health Network.
Early consultative discussions revealed wider concerns around their production environment. Iain MacIntyre, NHS Health Scotland programme manager, described the challenge they faced: “As the preventative health agenda was gaining momentum in Scotland, our services were growing but our systems and processes could not keep pace. We knew our overall efficiency was being held back and we needed a way to address this disparity”.
Brightsolid proposed a Private Cloud that would better support their performance and growth needs. Private Cloud was a perfect first step in the journey to the cloud for NHS Health Scotland as they would be able to realise the benefits associated with infrastructure-as- a-service, such as scalability, security, reliability and a shift from Capex to Opex.
Brightsolid also delivered additional hosting and security services such as provision and configuration, monitoring, remediation, patching, antivirus and more. These were delivered by highly skilled and accredited Brightsolid engineers, based in Scotland. This freed up NHS Health Scotland internal IT teams to focus on other areas of business priority.
The project was an overall success. Iain said: “Our private cloud service immediately provided us with a more resilient, responsive and scalable solution than we could ever have created ourselves. We are now looking forward to working with Brightsolid to extend that service”.
NHS Health Scotland are now embarking on the next stage of their cloud journey with Brightsolid, as they transition their service to the Brightsolid Enterprise Cloud.
The wider ‘Cloud First’ Government strategy means there is an increasing shift towards multi-tenanted cloud solutions, which are becoming more ubiquitous across public sector health organisations. The Brightsolid Enterprise Cloud will remove limitations associated with dedicated infrastructure and will offer an even more scalable solution to meet their future needs, supported by second site disaster recovery.
